In addition to teaching one of the CHP elective courses this fall (MUS 134 Music of Asia, already full), Prof. Clendinning will also be offering a special version of the course MUS 117: Balinese Gamelan Ensemble (1 credit hour). It is unfortunately logistically too hard to practice on the instruments and we’re not allowed to perform this fall, so we’re doing a semester of reading and listening–including reading Dr. Clendinning’s new book, a history/ethnography of gamelan and education in the US. As usual, the class is open to WFU students with any level of past musical experience; we will be joined by some UNCSA students and a few community gamelan players. This course will be particularly of interest to students who are studying music, education, Asian and Asian-American studies, tourism, etc. There also may be some students who would find it rewarding to discuss a new book directly with its author in a low-key, participation-oriented setting.
